The blog/site +Q Perfume, is committed to bring updated information about perfumes, perfumery and perfumers. In doing so, I could not leave aside subjects related to the backstage of the process of fragrance creation. So I went straight to the source: The Perfumer!

The French perfumer Jean Luc Morineau works today in Brazil, as senior perfumer and the head of the creations of L’Atelier Parfums, a national fragrance company. But the love he has developed for Brazil started a long time ago. He came to Brazil to work as a perfumer, in a Firminich’s Brazilian branch. Since than, he worked in many other great companies, such as Robertet, IFF and Dracoco. He has been already living here for 30 years, and he is today a very experienced researcher of Amazonian raw materials. The perfumer agreed to share a little bit of this passion for perfumery and for Brazil with my readers! So find here the interview and enter to Morineau’s magical world:

Acompanhem aqui a entrevista e entrem no mundo mágico do Sr. Morineau:

+Q Perfume: First of all I would like to thank you so much for your presence here at +Q perfume blog/site. It is really very important to me and to my readers to learn a little bit of the backstage of this fascinating world of perfumery.

+Q Perfume: How did you become a perfumer?

JLM: After a chirurgical intervention a friend from my childhood came to visit me. He had graduated perfumer after 3 years studying with a perfumer, who was also a retired chemical engineer, in charge of taking care of the graduation of new perfumers of a company. He introduced me to him, and after an olfactory test I was accepted. During 3 years I received organic chemistry, perfumery and botanic classes given by this senior perfumer. After that I continued my studies in an international company he represented at that time, first in Paris, than Geneva, New York and São Paulo. It has been already 18 years that I have left international perfumery and chemical companies to dedicate myself to L’Atelier Parfums.

+Q Perfume: Is the work that you have been developing with L’Atilier Parfums very different from the work you were developing in these big international companies?

JLM: In big international companies you have the chance of developing a product that Will be approved by a big international client, but marketing and commercial departments will have the contact with this client, not the perfumer. In branches like Brazil you work more to develop detergents and cleaning products more than fine fragrances. L’Atelier clients are not so big, but the contact is direct and very broad.

+Q Perfume: What inspires you as a designer? What does influence you in the process of creating?

JLM: The process of creation doesn’t have much of an explanation or limits. It can be a memory of the past, a reproduction of a happy and perfumed environment, an attempt to put 2 or 3 new fragrances into harmony. The same way a painter’s art is to harmonize colors, a musician’s to harmonizes sounds, I try to harmonize scents.

+Q Perfume: Do you have anything that can indentify that a fragrance is yours? A signature sort of speaking?

JLM: No. /Não.

+Q Perfume: In your opinion, why perfumes are so fascinating?

JLM: They are, above all, a form of communication, and they help us to catch other human beings’ attentions; they match our personality; sometimes they bring us happy memories from the past; they make us feel more secure around strangers.

+Q Perfume: Is there any other designer’s fragrance(s) you wish you had created?

JLM: There are a lot of great perfumes I wish I had created. One of them touched me deeply while I was graduating as a perfumer. I would have loved to participate in the creation of EAU SAUVAGE by Christian Dior, designed by Edmond Rudniska, researcher and perfumer of the Swiss company Firmenich, where I worked at that time.

+Q perfume: Ah...Eau Sauvage, my dad’s greatest Love! He has been wearing it since 1970. It is the fragrance of my childhood...I always loved this perfume. To me it is timeless!

+Q Perfume: Ah...Eau Sauvage, o grande amor do meu pai!

+Q Perfume: You are very dedicated to the research of raw materials from the Amazon. Why this interest? What is so special about them?

JLM: The creation of new perfumes has become a bigger challenge to perfumers. The research process with the new analysis equipment diminishes the creativity. It is very common nowadays to find 15 new perfumes with identical backbones structures. So the only way to assure originality is:

By the discovery of new odorant molecules - This is a privilege to big chemical industries, with molecule researches in their payrolls.

By the discovery of new essential oils - this is the only chance for an isolated researcher, in his adventures to find a new scent. And this is only possible in less explored regions. The Amazon is the best option.

Today Brazil imports most of the essential oils used in perfumery from China, India, Africa and Europe. The only way to balance the chances is to explore the Amazon (without destroying it), and by that, to open a new way to create economical development resources to the Brazilian indians.

Merci Jean Luc!
