Perfumes, coffee, wine, liqueurs etc.../Perfumes, cafés, vinhos, e licores etc...

Angel by Thierry Mugler
When Thierry Mugler launched Angel in 1992 he started a new trend called oriental gourmet perfumes.
The fragrance, created by perfumers Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chiris, was a recreation of olfactive memories and emotions of childhood. With notes of caramel, vanilla, chocolate, peaches, apricot and passion fruit, the perfume reminded us of cotton candy, sugared almonds. The sweetness that captured the heart of every woman from 15 to 85, became a marker of the international perfumery history.
A*Men Pure Coffee by Thierry Mugler
So the brand discovered where the big bucks were... and decided to take gourmet perfumery into the next level. A*men Pure Coffee, launched in 2008 and a masculine fragrance was presented as a step-by-step creation. The original fragrance A*Men, launched in 1996 and with base notes of coffee combined with styrax, tonka and musk was modified, and A* Men Pure Coffee was born, with the fragrance of burned coffee grinds of strong expressos.
With the extraction method with supercritical CO2, perfumer Jacques Huclier added a Colombian coffee (Arabica) note that was purely reproduced in the perfume.
It was born the marketing concept of adding coffee brew to perfumes to enhance coffee fragrance. Adding the real coffee brew was also the marketing appeal for the last new launches of Brazilian brand O Boticário, with Coffee man and Coffee woman, with notes of coffee oil CO2.
A*Men Pure Malt by Thierry Mugler
Apparentely emphasizing edible, "drinkable" notes to perfume was not enough to Thierry, so in 2009 Thierry Mugler launched A*Men Pure Malt. The fragrance not only had the smell of whisky but it was also prepared like them, aged in a wooden cask. The idea was to bring to the perfume, the special fragrance of oak found in the Scottish whisky.
Again, another success was launched and Thierry continued to explore the processes of aging alcoholic beverages in his fragrances.
Thierry Alien Liqueur de Parfum was aged in oak casks like rum does, and Thierry Angel Liqueur de Parfum was aged in cherry oak barrels like cognacs.

Brazilian brand O Boticário also launched in 2004 and 2008 their own version of aged-in-barrels fragrances: Barolo and Malbec - two fragrances with wine notes and another technological fragrant improvement - alcohol obtained by the distillation of wine.

The question raised is weather we can really feel any detectable difference in all these fragrances? Does the aging process attribute any valued characteristics to the fragrance?
Can the nose of consumers (not perfumers) detect the difference between a real coffee CO2 extract and the regular coffee notes?
My answer is that weather we feel the difference or not, it is the promise that is catching the eye. As we are entering in a new golden age of perfumery, where Niche brands are becoming a notable trend, and hundreds of prestige brand's perfumes are being launched every year, big brands are learning that, not only they have to stand out but today's consumers want experiences, not brands. Gimmick or not, the perfumes are indeed selling out!
